XF-20 Photo Journal

The following Gallery represents a step by step Photo Journal of the build process and modifications to the above photo that Ken Owens and Mike Mikos made during this boat's construction.

The boat as originally planned. An extremely shallow 20' flats boat.

The first set of many modifications to the original plan were the addition of a front casting deck and a sole for the boat.

The materials for the boat's construction. The primary construction method would be stitch and glue with the creation of a composite hull

Nida Core Material for use in the two casting decks and in the sole

Ken Owens with materials and a scale model of original plan boat

The start of construction for the hull stringers.

The stringers and bulkheads tacked temporarily in place to form mold for hull construction

Butt Blocks added to join hull pieces together

Ken begins the stitching process by drilling holes in each piece and loosely joining with tie wraps

Gunnels, transom, hull all stitched together

Final touches and checking for true hull before gluing boat pieces together with epoxy filler.

All seams joined with fiberglass tape and epoxy. Tunnel cutout made in hull bottom

Bracing for tunnel constructed and glassed into place

Tunnel glassed into place in hull with epoxy and fiberglass tape.

Rigid foam that ken shaped to form outer hull seams for tunnel

Foam pieces glassed into tunnel hull bottom

Tunnel glassed over and first coat of glass added to bottom

First layer of 1708 biaxial matted fiberglass cloth is epoxied onto bottom of hull

Last piece of second layer of fiberglass cloth layed out prior to epoxy addition

Hull glassing finished. With 2 overlapping layer of cloth this is going to be one strong bottom

Hull fairing begins. Mixture of epoxy and microballons are added to the hull to even out (fair) the surface and remove hulls and dips in the hull.

Final washdown of hull bottom. All sides and bottom faired and ready for next step

Graphite and epoxy mixture (two coats) added to hull bottom for puncture protection and extra slickness. Hull is now taken off cradle and fliped over

Laying out the fiberglass cloth for the inside of the hull. Making sure seams overlap for strength

Inside all glassed and now we are adding the stringers.

Stringers added and fiberglass cloth is epoxied over them to hull bottom to ensure complete encapsulation

First bulkhead epoxied into place

All bulkheads glassed into place.

Ken is now adding finishing touches to hull inside. Here he is making sure fuel tank supports are correct.

Supports added for tower and batteries. All epoxy coated and glassed into place

Transom build up finished. This was made higher to accommodate the Bob's Jack Plate and insure correct height of engine to tunnel

PVC piping added for cable and wiring runs.

Front casting deck supports all joined and epoxy coated

Rear Casting deck supports all joined and epoxy coated

Hatch drains constucted for front and rear

Gunnel walkaround supports added and epoxied

Tower Compressor sized and support added under console

Nida Core decks cutout and loosely fitted into place.
