Ken Owens' XF-20
Project boat
Board member YozuriKen
is an experienced boat builder. He co-designed the Xtreme Flats
boat with the owner of Bateau.com. As an experienced flats
fisherman, he had talked for years about a tunnel hull. He was
persistent and some memorable arguments occurred between the
designers. The resultant design is the best possible no-compromise
extreme flats boat.
Features like the light
weight, quiet hull and low freeboard for reduced windage are common to
many flats boats but here we have a hull that can be built within a
small budget and perform better than most carbon fiber machines
costing 30K.
The XF20 is light and
will run fast with a small outboard. Nothing larger than a 50hp is
necessary, as this keeps the weight down, the draft low and the trim
reasonable. She will top out at 25 mph with a 25 HP, 30 with a 30 HP.
The XF20 hull weighs 450 lbs as designed. At a displacement of 1,000+
lbs, equal to two or three fishermen, engine and gear, the draft will
be only 3". The buoyancy and stability are impressive: it takes 413
lbs to increase the draft by one inch.

With those design
specifications in mind, when board member Cat-A-Tonic decided that he
needed a flats boat, a plan came together. Ken would build Cat's
boat and add some design changes of their making. The idea
being, to go beyond the original specifications in terms of features,
and still keep the weight, draft and performance within the original
specifications.
